Topics in Oscillations
1. Periodic Motion, Oscillatory Motion, and Basic Terms
- Periodic motion repeats itself after equal intervals of time.
- Oscillatory motion is a to-and-fro motion about a mean position.
- Every oscillatory motion is periodic, but every periodic motion need not be oscillatory.
2. Simple Harmonic Motion
- SHM is the simplest form of oscillatory motion.
- In SHM, displacement varies sinusoidally with time.
- The restoring force is directly proportional to displacement from the mean position and is directed towards the mean position.
3. SHM and Uniform Circular Motion
- SHM can be understood as the projection of uniform circular motion on a diameter.
- A particle P moving uniformly on a circle of radius A with angular speed ω has a projection P' that executes SHM.
- Projection on the x-axis and y-axis differ in phase by π/2.
4. Velocity and Acceleration in SHM
- Velocity and acceleration in SHM are also sinusoidal.
- Velocity leads displacement by a phase of π/2.
- Acceleration is opposite to displacement and leads displacement by a phase of π.
