Topics in Motion in a Plane
1. Scalars, Vectors, and Vector Algebra
- A scalar quantity has magnitude only and is completely described by a number with unit.
- A vector quantity has both magnitude and direction and follows the triangle law or parallelogram law of addition.
- Distance, mass, temperature, and time are scalars.
2. Resolution and Addition of Vectors
- A vector in a plane can be resolved into two perpendicular components along x and y axes.
- Unit vectors i-hat and j-hat have unit magnitude and point along the x- and y-axes.
- A vector can be written as A = A_x i-hat + A_y j-hat.
3. Motion in a Plane with Constant Acceleration
- Motion in a plane with constant acceleration can be treated as two independent one-dimensional motions along perpendicular axes.
- Position, velocity, and acceleration all have component forms.
- If acceleration is constant, velocity changes linearly with time and position changes quadratically with time.
4. Projectile Motion
- A projectile is an object in flight after being thrown or projected.
- Projectile motion is the result of two simultaneous motions: uniform horizontal motion and uniformly accelerated vertical motion due to gravity.
- The horizontal acceleration is zero, while vertical acceleration is downward and equal to -g.
Key Concepts
Central concept: Motion in a plane using vectors, component method, projectile motion, and uniform circular motion
