1. Male Reproductive System

  • The male reproductive system is located in the pelvic region and includes a pair of testes, accessory ducts, accessory glands, and external genitalia.
  • The testes are situated outside the abdominal cavity in the scrotum.
  • The scrotum maintains the testes at a temperature 2–2.5° C lower than normal internal body temperature, which is necessary for spermatogenesis.

2. Female Reproductive System

  • The female reproductive system consists of a pair of ovaries, a pair of oviducts, uterus, cervix, vagina, external genitalia, and mammary glands.
  • The ovaries are the primary female sex organs and produce ova and steroid hormones.
  • Each ovary is 2 to 4 cm in length.

3. Gametogenesis: Spermatogenesis and Oogenesis

  • Gametogenesis is the process by which gametes are formed.
  • Spermatogenesis occurs in the testes and begins at puberty due to increased GnRH secretion.
  • GnRH stimulates the anterior pituitary to release LH and FSH.

  • The reproductive cycle in female primates is called the menstrual cycle.
  • Menarche is the first menstruation at puberty.
  • The cycle repeats at an average interval of 28/29 days.
