Prakriti’s mother reacts with alarm, disbelief, and fear. She cannot understand Prakriti’s excitement, warns her that there will be a price to pay for speaking to the monk, and reminds her of her caste. At first she thinks Prakriti has become intoxicated or bewitched. Later, though she is frightened of the wrong she is asked to do, she still agrees to help her daughter because she loves her and wants to save her from suffering.

No, Prakriti does not resign herself to her lot. She refuses to accept the humiliation attached to her birth. She says that she fears only falling back into the old life of self-forgetfulness and darkness, and she insists on challenging the social order that has degraded her. Her desire for Ananda becomes a struggle for self-realisation and freedom, not passive acceptance.

The spell does work, but not in the way Prakriti first imagines. Ananda is drawn step by step towards her, yet the working of the spell produces great suffering in him and also in Prakriti and her mother. Through the mirror Prakriti sees his distress, his loss of peace, and his spiritual anguish. In the end, when he comes to her door, she is horrified by his degraded state and immediately asks for the spell to be undone. Thus the spell leads to remorse, self-knowledge, and redemption, not possession.

Giving water becomes significant because Ananda’s request makes Prakriti feel that she is recognised as a human being for the first time. He tells her that he, too, is human, and that all water is clean and holy if it cools thirst. This simple act breaks the barrier of caste humiliation and gives her a sense of new birth. What is ordinary for others becomes sacred for her because it restores her dignity and awakens her sense of worth.

The girl is named Prakriti because the name suggests nature, life, earth, and primal force. In the play she is closely linked with the imagery of water, earth, flower, rain, storm, fire, mist, and new birth. These images reflect her awakening, passion, struggle, and transformation. She is like a flower sprung from a poison-plant, a force of nature whose emotions rise with the power of the earth itself.

The churning of emotions leads Prakriti to self-realisation because her desire, shame, pride, joy, and remorse all clash until she understands the true meaning of love and freedom. At first she wants to possess Ananda, but when she sees his suffering she realises that true love does not demand possession. This insight is won through suffering, and her mother dies while revoking the spell. So her awakening comes at a heavy cost: she becomes wiser, but the price is her mother’s life.

The mirror reveals Ananda’s inward turmoil by showing the changing states of his mind and body as the spell works. Prakriti sees mist, then red and angry clusters, then black cloud and lightning, and later Ananda’s face full of torment. The mirror also shows his anger turning inward until it pierces his own breast. Thus the mirror becomes a symbol of the monk’s spiritual struggle, suffering, and loss of peace.
