Units of Length and Their Applications
- Different objects need different units for measurement based on their size
- Small objects like mobile phones are measured in centimetres (cm)
- Medium objects like height of buildings are measured in metres (m)
Unit Conversions and Relationships
- 1 cm = 10 mm (millimetre is smaller than centimetre)
- 1 m = 100 cm (metre is bigger than centimetre)
- 1 km = 1000 m (kilometre is biggest unit we use)
Comparing Lengths
- Convert to same unit before comparing lengths
- Use symbols: < (less than), = (equal to), > (greater than)
- When comparing mixed units, convert everything to the same unit
Adding and Subtracting Lengths
- Add or subtract like units: metres with metres, centimetres with centimetres
- Convert the result if it exceeds the unit limit (e.g., 115 cm = 1 m 15 cm)
- When subtracting, borrow from the larger unit if needed
