1. Rotation of the Earth

  • The Earth spins on its own axis.
  • The Earth's axis passes through the geographic North Pole and South Pole.
  • Viewed from above the North Pole, the Earth rotates anti-clockwise, which means West to East.

2. Revolution of the Earth and Orbit

  • Revolution means the motion of an object around another object.
  • The path taken during revolution is called an orbit.
  • Earth revolves around the Sun in about 365 days and 6 hours.

3. Seasons on the Earth

  • The Earth's axis is tilted, not upright, with respect to its orbit.
  • The tilt of the Earth's axis and the spherical shape of the Earth give rise to seasons.
  • In June, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun and the Southern Hemisphere is tilted away.

4. Eclipses

  • A solar eclipse happens when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth and blocks sunlight from reaching Earth.
  • Mercury and Venus can pass between Earth and the Sun, but they are too small in apparent size to block the Sun completely.
  • The Moon can cover the Sun because the apparent sizes of the Moon and the Sun in the sky are similar as seen from Earth.
