1. Life Processes and the Alimentary Canal
- Life processes are essential for survival.
- The alimentary canal starts in the mouth and ends at the anus.
- Digestion begins in the mouth, but food is only partially digested there.
2. Digestion in the Mouth, Stomach, and Small Intestine
- Teeth break food into smaller pieces by crushing and chewing.
- Saliva contains a digestive juice that helps break down starch into sugar.
- Chewed starchy food can taste sweet because starch starts changing into sugar in the mouth.
3. Large Intestine, Stool, and Egestion
- The large intestine is about 1.5 metres long.
- It is shorter but wider than the small intestine.
- The large intestine absorbs water and some salts from undigested food.
4. Special Digestion in Animals
- Grass-eating animals such as cows and buffaloes are called ruminants.
- Ruminants partially chew grass, swallow it, partially digest it in the stomach, and then bring it back to the mouth for rumination.
- A cow spends about 8 hours a day just chewing food.
