  • Litmus is a natural substance obtained from lichens.
  • Litmus is available as a solution and as paper strips in blue and red colours.
  • Lichens are formed by a fungus and an alga living together.

3. Neutralisation

  • When an acid mixes with a base in sufficient quantity, the resulting solution is neither acidic nor basic.
  • Such reactions are called neutralisation reactions.
  • Neutralisation produces salt and water with the release of heat.
