2. Simple Pendulum and Time Period

  • A pendulum at rest is in its mean position.
  • When the bob is moved slightly and released, the pendulum starts oscillating.
  • Pendulum motion is periodic because it repeats its path after a fixed interval of time.

  • The SI unit of time is the second and its symbol is s.
  • The larger units of time are minute (min) and hour (h).
  • The symbols s, min, and h are written in lowercase and without a full stop unless they end a sentence.

  • Speed means the distance covered by an object in a unit time.
  • The speed of an object is the total distance covered divided by the total time taken to cover it.
  • Since speed = distance/time, the SI unit of speed is metre/second and is written as m/s.
