1. Measurement of Time
- A day was defined by the cycle of rising and setting of the Sun.
- People first used repeated natural events such as the phases of the Moon and changing seasons to keep track of time.
- Ancient time-measuring devices included sundials, water clocks, hourglasses, and candle clocks.
2. Simple Pendulum and Time Period
- A pendulum at rest is in its mean position.
- When the bob is moved slightly and released, the pendulum starts oscillating.
- Pendulum motion is periodic because it repeats its path after a fixed interval of time.
3. Units of Time and Accuracy
- The SI unit of time is the second and its symbol is s.
- The larger units of time are minute (min) and hour (h).
- The symbols s, min, and h are written in lowercase and without a full stop unless they end a sentence.
4. Speed and Related Formulae
- Speed means the distance covered by an object in a unit time.
- The speed of an object is the total distance covered divided by the total time taken to cover it.
- Since speed = distance/time, the SI unit of speed is metre/second and is written as m/s.
