  • Life processes are essential for survival.
  • The alimentary canal starts in the mouth and ends at the anus.
  • Digestion begins in the mouth, but food is only partially digested there.

  • Teeth break food into smaller pieces by crushing and chewing.
  • Saliva contains a digestive juice that helps break down starch into sugar.
  • Chewed starchy food can taste sweet because starch starts changing into sugar in the mouth.

  • The large intestine is about 1.5 metres long.
  • It is shorter but wider than the small intestine.
  • The large intestine absorbs water and some salts from undigested food.

  • Grass-eating animals such as cows and buffaloes are called ruminants.
  • Ruminants partially chew grass, swallow it, partially digest it in the stomach, and then bring it back to the mouth for rumination.
  • A cow spends about 8 hours a day just chewing food.
