What to Focus On

  • Cells divide to restore the normal surface area to volume ratio.
  • Cells divide to restore the normal nucleus to cytoplasm ratio.
  • All cells arise from pre-existing cells — this is the Cell Doctrine.

  • Cell cycle = period from end of one division to end of next division.
  • Cell cycle lasts 10–30 hours; actual division takes only 30 min–1 hour.
  • Interphase consists of G₁, S, and G₂ phases in sequence.

  • M-phase consists of karyokinesis (nuclear division) and cytokinesis (cytoplasmic division).
  • Three types of nuclear division: amitosis, mitosis, and meiosis.
  • Amitosis: no spindle, occurs in bacteria, Paramecium macronucleus.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Meiosis produces 2 daughter cells, just like mitosis

Chromosomes split into two during S-phase, so each chromosome becomes two separate chromosomes

Prophase is the shortest phase and Anaphase is the longest phase of mitosis
