  • Neuron is the basic structural and functional unit of the nervous system.
  • Neuron parts are soma, dendrites, axon and axon terminals.
  • Soma is also called cyton or cell body.
  • Myelinated and non-myelinated neurons are classified on the basis of myelin sheath.
  • Sensory neurons carry impulses to the CNS.
  • Motor neurons carry impulses from the CNS to effectors.
  • Nerve impulse is the message transmitted by the axon.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The myelin sheath is part of the neuron.

Ganglia are found inside the central nervous system and contain whole neurons including axons and dendrites.

All nerves are the same, so sensory nerves, motor nerves, and mixed nerves can be used interchangeably.
