Formulas and Key Relations

1. Hydrogen Chloride and Hydrochloric Acid

NaCl + H₂SO₄ →Heat NaHSO₄ + HCl(g)

2HCl ⇌500°C H₂ + Cl₂

HCl(g) + NH₃(g) → NH₄Cl(s)

HCl + AgNO₃ → AgCl↓ + HNO₃

HCl + Pb(NO₃)₂ → PbCl₂↓ + 2HNO₃

2. Ammonia

2NH₄Cl + Ca(OH)₂ →Heat CaCl₂ + 2H₂O + 2NH₃↑

Mg₃N₂ + 6H₂O → 3Mg(OH)₂ + 2NH₃(g)

N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃ + 93.6 kJ mol⁻¹

4NH₃ + 3O₂ → 2N₂ + 6H₂O

4NH₃ + 5O₂ →Pt 800°C 4NO + 6H₂O

3. Nitric Acid

KNO₃ + H₂SO₄(Conc.) →150-200°C KHSO₄ + HNO₃(Vapour)

2NO + O₂ → 2NO₂

4NO₂ + 2H₂O + O₂ → 4HNO₃

4HNO₃ →Heat 4NO₂ + 2H₂O + O₂

4. Sulphuric Acid

2SO₂ + O₂ ⇌V₂O₅ 400-450°C 2SO₃ + 196.6 kJ

H₂SO₄ + SO₃ → H₂S₂O₇

H₂S₂O₇ + H₂O → 2H₂SO₄

C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁ →Conc. H₂SO₄ 12C + 11H₂O

C + 2H₂SO₄(Conc.) → CO₂ + 2SO₂ + 2H₂O

Key relations

Hydrogen chloride is prepared in the laboratory by heating sodium chloride with concentrated sulphuric acid: NaCl + H2SO4 →Heat NaHSO4 + HCl(g).

Ammonia is prepared in the laboratory from ammonium chloride and calcium hydroxide: 2NH4Cl + Ca(OH)2 →Heat CaCl2 + 2H2O + 2NH3↑.
