Formulas

Acids: Definition, Types and Basicity

HCl + H2O → H3O+ + Cl−

CH3COOH + H2O ⇌ CH3COO− + H3O+

Basicity of an acid = number of H3O+ or H+ furnished by one molecule

Bases and Alkalis

KOH(aq.) → K+ + OH−

NH4OH ⇌ NH4+ + OH−

Acidity of a base = number of OH− ions furnished by one molecule

pH, Water and Indicators

pH = -log10 [H3O+ concentration]

2H2O ⇌ H3O+ + OH−

Kw = [H3O+][OH−] = 1 × 10^-14 mol^2/litre^2 (each ion is 1 × 10^-7 mol/litre)

Salts: Definition and Types

Salt = partial or complete replacement of replaceable H atoms of an acid by metallic ion or ammonium ion

Acid salt forms when basicity of acid > acidity of base

Basic salt forms when acidity of base > basicity of acid
