Hydrogen Chloride Gas and Hydrochloric Acid

  • HCl gas is prepared by heating NaCl with conc. H₂SO₄ at <200°C
  • HCl gas is colourless, pungent smelling, and 1.27 times heavier than air
  • Highly soluble in water (452 volumes in 1 volume of water)

Ammonia (NH₃)

  • Lab preparation: NH₄Cl + Ca(OH)₂ → CaCl₂ + 2H₂O + 2NH₃
  • Alternative: Metal nitrides + warm water (Mg₃N₂ + 6H₂O → 3Mg(OH)₂ + 2NH₃)
  • Haber's process: N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃ (450-500°C, 200-900 atm, Fe catalyst)

Nitric Acid (HNO₃)

  • Lab preparation: KNO₃ + H₂SO₄ → KHSO₄ + HNO₃ (150-200°C)
  • Ostwald's process: NH₃ → NO → NO₂ → HNO₃ (3-step industrial method)
  • Pure HNO₃ is colourless, commercial acid is yellowish due to dissolved NO₂

Sulphuric Acid (H₂SO₄)

  • Contact Process: S → SO₂ → SO₃ → H₂SO₄ (industrial method)
  • Key reaction: 2SO₂ + O₂ ⇌ 2SO₃ (V₂O₅ catalyst, 400-450°C)
  • Colourless, dense, oily liquid (sp. gr. 1.84), highly corrosive
