1. Meaning of Demand and Quantity Demanded
- Demand means effective desire for a commodity backed by ability to pay and willingness to pay.
- Demand requires three conditions: desire, capacity or ability to pay, and willingness to pay.
- Demand is a relative concept because it is always linked with price and time.
2. Types of Demand
- Joint demand exists when two or more goods are demanded together for one purpose.
- Joint demand is also called complementary demand.
- Examples of joint demand include printers and ink, car and petrol, and mobile and sim card.
3. Individual Demand and Market Demand
- Individual demand is the demand of one consumer or one household.
- Market demand is the total demand of all consumers in the market at a given price and time.
- Market demand is obtained by adding the individual demands of all consumers.
4. Demand Curve and Demand Schedule
- Demand curve is the graphical representation of a demand schedule.
- A demand curve shows the relation between the price of a commodity and the amount of that commodity the consumer wishes to purchase.
- Demand curve is a locus of points showing various alternative price quantity combinations.
