  • An inequality compares two real numbers or algebraic expressions using <, >, <=, or >=.
  • Strict inequalities use < or >.
  • Slack inequalities use <= or >=.

  • Equal numbers may be added to both sides without changing the sign.
  • Equal numbers may be subtracted from both sides without changing the sign.
  • Multiplying or dividing both sides by a positive number keeps the sign unchanged.

  • Linear inequalities in one variable have the form ax+b < 0, <= 0, > 0, or >= 0.
  • Linear inequalities in two variables have the form ax+by+c < 0, <= 0, > 0, or >= 0.
  • The same algebraic inequality can have different solution sets depending on whether x is natural, whole, integer, or real.

  • A compound inequality contains at least two inequalities joined by and or or.
  • For and, the solution set is the intersection of the individual solution sets.
  • For or, the solution set is the union of the individual solution sets.
