Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Sets and Their Representation

  • A set is a well-defined collection of objects.
  • A collection is well-defined when it is possible to decide whether an object belongs to it or not, and the decision does not vary from person to person.
  • Sets are denoted by capital letters such as A, B, C, and elements are usually denoted by small letters such as a, b, c.
2

2. Subsets, Proper Subsets, Universal Set, and Intervals

  • If every element of A is also an element of B, then A is a subset of B, written A ⊆ B.
  • Every set is a subset of itself.
  • The empty set is a subset of every set.
3

3. Power Set and Number of Subsets

  • The power set P(A) is the collection of all subsets of A.
  • In a power set, every element is a set.
  • If A = φ, then P(A) = {φ}.
4

4. Operations on Sets

  • Union of A and B contains elements that are in A or in B or in both.
  • Intersection of A and B contains elements common to both sets.
  • Two sets are disjoint if their intersection is empty.
