5.1 - Definition and Nature of Learning

  • Learning is the process of acquiring knowledge that helps individuals develop or change behaviours to adjust to a continuously changing environment or attain a goal
  • Learning is a process, not an end result - it is continuous and never-ending throughout life
  • Learning involves trainings, practices, and experiences that create relatively stable and enduring changes in behaviour

5.2 - Theories of Learning

  • Learning theories are classified into two broad categories: Behaviourist (S-R) theories and Cognitive theories
  • Behaviourist theories focus on observable stimulus-response associations and ignore internal mental processes
  • Cognitive theories emphasize the role of thinking, understanding, perception, and active information processing

5.2.1 - Trial and Error Theory (Thorndike)

  • Edward Lee Thorndike proposed that learning occurs through trial and error - attempting solutions until finding one that works
  • Based on associationism: mental activity consists of stimulus-response sensations and simple ideas forming connections
  • Learning is mechanical and doesn't involve thinking, understanding, or reasoning

5.2.2 - Classical Conditioning Theory (Pavlov)

  • Ivan Pavlov, Russian physiologist, established that learning can be automatic and reflexive - a new stimulus can acquire capacity to evoke existing responses
  • Four key components: UCS (Unconditioned Stimulus), UCR (Unconditioned Response), CS (Conditioned Stimulus), CR (Conditioned Response)
  • Initially, only UCS produces UCR automatically. Neutral stimulus alone produces no response
