1. Attention: Meaning, Nature, and Types

  • Attention is a higher order mental process of selecting and concentrating on one specific stimulus from among several stimuli.
  • Attention is a process or function of mind, not a power or ability.
  • Attention is not possible in the absence of interest or desire.

2. Determinants of Attention

  • Determinants of attention are of two broad types: external or stimulus-related determinants and internal or person-related determinants.
  • Internal determinants are further divided into mental condition and physical condition.
  • External determinants include intensity, size, shape, colour, change, mobility, novelty, contrast, long duration, and repetition.

3. Sensation and Perception

  • Sensation is the initial awareness about a stimulus.
  • Sensation is a passive and involuntary process.
  • Sensation cannot be generated intentionally.

4. Perceptual Organisation

  • Gestalt psychologists proposed principles of perceptual organisation.
  • The Gestalt psychologists named are Max Wartheimer, Kurt Koffka, and Wolfgang Kohler.
  • They held that stimuli are perceived as a whole.
