What to Focus On

  • A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances is called a solution.
  • The solvent is present in excess and has the same physical state as the solution.
  • In solid-liquid solutions, the solid is always the solute.

  • Mass percentage is mass of solute per 100 g of solution.
  • ppm is useful for extremely dilute solutions.
  • ppm equals mg of solute per litre of solution in aqueous dilute solutions.

  • Molarity uses volume of solution and changes with temperature.
  • Molality uses mass of solvent and does not change with temperature.
  • Normality depends on valence factor and is temperature dependent.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Molarity and molality mean the same thing and can be used interchangeably.

Normality and molarity are always equal.

Formality is just another name for molarity.
