Meaning and Features of Balance of Payments
- Balance of Payments is an accounting statement that gives a systematic record of all economic transactions between residents of a country and residents of foreign countries during a given period of ti
- BOP accounts relate to a certain time period, usually a financial year.
- BOP has three defining features: systematic record, components such as current account and capital account, and flow concept.
Balance of Trade and Current Account
- Balance of Trade is the difference between the value of total imports and exports of visible material goods only.
- Balance of Trade is also called the merchandise account.
- Balance of Trade is narrower than Current Account and much narrower than BOP.
Capital Account and Capital Transactions
- Capital account records all transactions between residents of a country and the rest of the world that cause a change in assets or liabilities of the country.
- Capital account concerns capital transactions involving short-term and long-term capital transfers, gold, and sale or purchase of assets.
