Understanding Multiplication

  • Multiplication is repeated addition. For example, 4 × 3 means 4 added 3 times: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
  • The number being multiplied is called the **multiplicand**.
  • The number by which we multiply is called the **multiplier**.

  • We can multiply numbers using column method or lattice method.
  • In column method, we multiply digit by digit and carry over extra tens or hundreds.
  • In lattice method, we use a grid with diagonals to write tens and ones separately.
