What to Focus On

  • Digits are 0 to 9.
  • Smallest one-digit number is 0, largest is 9.
  • Smallest two-digit number is 10, largest is 99.

  • Four-digit numbers have Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Ones places.
  • Place value depends on the digit's position.
  • Face value of a digit is the digit itself and does not change with position.

  • Abacus has spikes for Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Ones.
  • Each ring represents one unit of that place.
  • No ring means 0 in that place.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Zero in a number means it's smaller, so 302 is less than 320 because it has a zero.

The place value of a digit is the digit itself, so the place value of 5 in 253 is 5.

When writing the smallest 4-digit number using digits 3, 0, 5, 8, we start with 0 like 0358.

Memory Tips

Place Value: Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones

Expanded Form: Breaking numbers into parts

Face Value vs Place Value

Zero in a number means no rings on abacus
