Indian and International Number Systems

  • In the Indian system, numbers are grouped into periods: Ones, Thousands, Lakhs, and Crores.
  • In the International system, numbers are grouped into: Ones, Thousands, and Millions.

Expanded and Short Form of Numbers

  • Expanded form means writing a number as the sum of the place values of each digit.
  • Short form is the usual way we write numbers (standard form).
  • Zeros in the middle of a number must be included in expanded form.

Comparing and Ordering Numbers

  • To compare numbers, start from the leftmost digit.
  • More digits mean a larger number (e.g., 6-digit > 5-digit).
  • If digits are equal, move to the next digit on the right.

Formation of Largest and Smallest Numbers

  • To make the largest number: arrange digits in descending order.
  • To make the smallest number: arrange digits in ascending order.
  • If 0 is one of the digits, it cannot be the first digit — place it second.
