Understanding Subtraction

  • Subtraction means taking away one number from another.
  • The number we subtract from is called the minuend.
  • The number being subtracted is called the subtrahend.

  • We subtract large numbers column by column — starting from the ones place.
  • If a digit in the minuend is smaller than the subtrahend digit, we borrow from the next higher place.
  • Borrowing means taking 1 from the next left digit and adding 10 to the current digit.
