Understanding Division

  • Division means splitting a number into equal parts.
  • The number being divided is called the dividend.
  • The number we divide by is called the divisor.

Division by 10, 100, and 1000

  • When dividing by 10, the last digit becomes the remainder, and the rest is the quotient.
  • When dividing by 100, the last two digits become the remainder.
  • When dividing by 1000, the last three digits become the remainder.

Long Division with 2-Digit and 3-Digit Divisors

  • For 2-digit divisors, start by dividing the first 2 or 3 digits of the dividend.
  • Use trial quotient: divide the first digit(s) of dividend by first digit of divisor.
  • Always multiply and subtract to find remainder at each step.

  • Read the problem carefully to identify the total amount (dividend) and number of parts (divisor).
  • Look for keywords like 'each', 'per', 'shared equally', 'divided into'.
