Basic Elements of a Triangle

  • A triangle is a closed figure formed by three line segments.
  • It has 3 sides, 3 vertices, and 3 interior angles.
  • The sum of all interior angles of a triangle is always 180°.

Exterior Angles of a Triangle

  • An exterior angle is formed when one side of a triangle is extended.
  • Each exterior angle is adjacent to an interior angle and forms a linear pair (sum = 180°).
  • An exterior angle is equal to the sum of the two opposite interior angles.

Types of Triangles

  • Triangles are classified based on angles and sides.
  • Based on angles: Acute-angled, Right-angled, Obtuse-angled.
  • Based on sides: Scalene, Isosceles, Equilateral.

Altitude and Median of a Triangle

  • An altitude is a perpendicular line from a vertex to the opposite side.
  • A triangle has three altitudes, and they meet at a point called the orthocentre.
  • A median joins a vertex to the midpoint of the opposite side.
