  • The word 'percent' comes from 'per centum', meaning 'per hundred'.
  • Percent is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100.
  • The symbol for percent is '%'.

2. Converting Fractions and Decimals to Percent

  • To convert a fraction to percent: Multiply by 100 and add the % symbol.
  • To convert a decimal to percent: Shift the decimal point two places to the right and add %.
  • Example: 3/4 = (3/4) × 100 = 75%.

3. Converting Percent to Fractions and Decimals

  • To convert percent to fraction: Remove % and divide by 100, then simplify.
  • To convert percent to decimal: Divide by 100 (shift decimal two places left).
  • Example: 40% = 40/100 = 2/5.

4. Expressing One Quantity as a Percentage of Another

  • To find what percent one quantity is of another: Divide first by second and multiply by 100%.
  • Both quantities must be in the same unit.
  • Example: 20 as a percent of 80 = (20/80) × 100% = 25%.
