Card 1Work

State the definition of work in Physics.

Answer

Work is said to be done if the force applied on a body moves it. If no motion takes place, no work is said to be done.

Card 2Work

A force of 200 N moves a body through 2 m in the direction of the force. Find the work done.

Answer

Given: Force = 200 N, Distance = 2 m Formula: W = F × d Step 1: W = 200 N × 2 m Step 2: W = 400 N m Answer: W = 400 J

Card 3Work

Why is no work done when a person pushes a wall that does not move?

Answer

Work done depends on force and motion. If the wall does not move, distance moved is 0 m, so W = F × d = 0. Therefore, no work is done.

Card 4Work

State the formula for work done and explain the symbols.

Answer

Formula: W = F × d W = work done F = force applied d = distance moved in the direction of force Unit of work: joule (J)

Card 5Work

A coolie raises a box of mass 50 kg to a height of 3 m. Take g = 10 N/kg. Find the work done.

Answer

Given: m = 50 kg, g = 10 N/kg, h = 3 m Force needed = mg = 50 × 10 = 500 N Formula: W = F × d Step 1: W = 500 N × 3 m Step 2: W = 1500 N m Answer: W = 1500 J

Card 6Work

When is work done by a force equal to zero even though a force acts on the body?

Answer

Work is zero when the body does not move, or when the motion is perpendicular to the force. Examples include pushing a wall and a stone whirled in a circle by string tension.

Card 7Units

State the SI unit of work and its definition.

Answer

The SI unit of work is joule (J). 1 J = 1 N × 1 m One joule of work is done when a force of 1 newton moves a body by 1 metre in the direction of the force.

Card 8Units

Convert 1 kgf × m into joule.

Answer

1 kgf × m = 9.8 newton × metre 1 kgf × m = 9.8 joule Answer: 1 kgf × m = 9.8 J
