Card 1Definition of matter

State the definition of matter.

Answer

Matter is something which occupies space, has mass and can be perceived by our senses. Examples include air, water, iron, hydrogen, oxygen, milk, oil, sugar, and salt.

Card 2Early idea of matter

Who was Maharishi Kanada, and what idea did he give about matter?

Answer

Maharishi Kanada was an ancient Indian philosopher who considered matter to be made up of tiny particles called anu.

Card 3Molecule

What is a molecule?

Answer

A molecule can exist free in nature and it has all the properties of that substance. A molecule is the basic unit of matter.

Card 4Size of molecule

How big is a molecule?

Answer

A molecule is of size nearly 10^-10 metre. It is too small to be seen even with a microscope.

Card 5Cohesion

What is the force of cohesion?

Answer

The force of attraction between molecules of the same substance is called force of cohesion.

Card 6Adhesion

What is the force of adhesion?

Answer

The force of attraction between molecules of two different substances is called force of adhesion.

Card 7Inter-molecular force

A substance has molecules separated by more than 10^-9 metre. What happens to the inter-molecular force?

Answer

The inter-molecular force becomes ineffective beyond a separation of 10^-9 metre and vanishes.

Card 8Flow of liquids

Why are liquids able to flow?

Answer

Liquids can flow because the molecular forces of attraction in them are weaker than in solids, so the molecules can move within the boundary of the vessel.
