Card 1Force

What is force?

Answer

Force is a push or pull that can change the state of rest or motion of a body, or change its size or shape.

Card 2Force

What does a force do to a rigid body?

Answer

A force applied to a rigid body can change only its motion. A rigid body keeps the spacing between its particles unchanged.

Card 3Force

What does a force do to a non-rigid body?

Answer

A force applied to a non-rigid body can change its motion as well as its size or shape, such as stretching or squeezing.

Card 4Units of Force

State the SI unit of force.

Answer

The SI unit of force is newton, symbol N. One newton is the force that when applied on a moving body of mass 1 kg in the direction of its motion, increases its speed by 1 m in one second.

Card 5Force

How are force and mass different?

Answer

Force does not change the mass of a body. Force can change motion or shape, but mass remains the same.

Card 6Moment of Force

A force of 8 N acts on a body for 3 m. Find the moment of force.

Answer

Given: F = 8 N, OP = 3 m Formula: Moment of force = Force × perpendicular distance Calculation: 8 N × 3 m = 24 N m Answer: 24 N m

Card 7Moment of Force

A force of 12 N acts at a perpendicular distance of 0.5 m from a pivot. Find the moment of force.

Answer

Given: F = 12 N, OP = 0.5 m Formula: Moment of force = F × OP Calculation: 12 N × 0.5 m = 6 N m Answer: 6 N m

Card 8Moment of Force

Reena applies a minimum force of 1.5 N on a door handle of width 1.2 m. Find the moment of force.

Answer

Given: F = 1.5 N, OP = 1.2 m Formula: Moment of force = Force × perpendicular distance Calculation: 1.5 N × 1.2 m = 1.8 N m Answer: 1.8 N m
