Refraction of Light

  • Refraction is the change in direction of the path of light when it passes from one optically transparent medium to another.
  • Light travels faster in air than in water or glass.
  • Speed of light in air is 3×10^8 m/s, in water it is 2.25×10^8 m/s, and in glass it is 2×10^8 m/s.

Effects of Refraction

  • A vessel full of water appears less deep than it really is when seen from air.
  • The apparent depth is less than the real depth.
  • A coin at the bottom of a vessel may become visible when water is poured because refraction makes it appear raised.

Prism and Dispersion

  • A prism is a transparent medium bounded by five plane surfaces with a triangular cross section.
  • A prism is represented by triangle ABC.
  • When a ray passes through a prism, it bends towards the base.

Spherical Mirrors

  • Spherical mirrors are made by silvering part of a hollow glass sphere.
  • The silvered surface is the coated surface, and reflection takes place from the other surface called the reflecting surface.
  • There are two kinds of spherical mirrors: concave and convex.
