Topics in Prepositions

1. Core idea of prepositions

  • A preposition shows the relationship between nouns or pronouns and other words in a sentence.
  • A preposition can connect a noun or pronoun to a verb, adjective, or another noun.
  • The noun or pronoun used with the preposition is called the object of the preposition.

2. Prepositions of time

  • On is used with specific days and dates.
  • In is used with parts of the day and longer periods such as months, years, decades, and seasons.
  • At is used with a specific point in time and with mealtimes.

3. Prepositions of place and position

  • In is used with countries, cities, large towns, large spaces, and enclosed spaces.
  • At is used with small places, addresses, specific points, places for activities, and spaces not in an enclosed area.
  • On is used for surfaces, borders, streets, islands, and public transport such as buses, trains, and planes.

4. Passive voice and special points

  • By is used to express the doer of the action in passive constructions.
  • With is used to denote the instrument with which the action is done in passive constructions.
  • In is used when somebody or something is located within a closed location.
