  • There are two ways of reporting what somebody says: direct speech and indirect speech.
  • Direct speech gives the exact words of the speaker.
  • Indirect speech reports the meaning of the speaker’s words.

  • When the reporting verb is in the past tense, the tense in reported speech usually changes.
