1. Basic Idea of Reporting Speech
- There are two ways of reporting what somebody says: direct speech and indirect speech.
- Direct speech gives the exact words of the speaker.
- Indirect speech reports the meaning of the speaker’s words.
2. Tense Changes with Past Reporting Verbs
- When the reporting verb is in the past tense, the tense in reported speech usually changes.
- Simple present changes to simple past.
- Present continuous changes to past continuous.
3. Reporting Verbs and Special Sentence Types
- In interrogative sentences, said can be changed to asked or enquired.
- In yes/no questions, the reporting verb is followed by if or whether.
- In imperative sentences, said can be changed to commanded, pleaded, requested, asked, urged, advised, and similar verbs.
