Phrases and Clauses
- A phrase gives only partial information and cannot make up a sentence on its own.
- A clause contains a subject and a finite verb.
- A sentence can exist as a single clause, but a single phrase cannot make up a sentence.
Types of Clauses
- A dependent clause is also called a subordinate clause.
- A dependent clause needs to be connected with the main clause by a subordinating conjunction to make complete sense.
- Noun clauses act as nouns and begin with words such as how, that, if, what, whatever, when, where, whether, which, whichever, who, whoever, whom, whomever, why.
Sentence Types
- A simple sentence has one subject and one predicate.
- A compound sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses, each with a subject and a predicate of its own.
- A complex sentence is made up of one independent and one or more dependent clauses, each having a subject and a predicate of its own.
Conjunctions
- Conjunctions join sentences, words and phrases.
- Conjunctions can be coordinating, subordinating or correlative depending on what they join.
- Coordinating conjunctions join two clauses or sentences of equal importance.
