1. Earth as a Unique Planet

  • Earth is one of the eight planets of the Solar System.
  • The eight planets in order of distance from the Sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
  • The word planet is derived from a Greek word meaning wanderer because planets revolve around the Sun.

  • Earth has three main realms: lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.
  • Lithosphere is the solid crust of rocks on the Earth's surface.
