What to Focus On

  • Mean of n observations is the sum of all observations divided by n.
  • Mean, arithmetic mean and average are the same.
  • Σxi is a short form for the sum of all observations.

  • Property 1: Σ(x - x̄) = 0.
  • Property 2: mean of x1 + a, x2 + a, ... , xn + a = x̄ + a.
  • Property 3: mean of x1 - a, x2 - a, ... , xn - a = x̄ - a.

  • Median is the middle term of an ordered data set.
  • Step 1: arrange the data in order.
  • Step 2: count the number of observations n.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Median can be found directly from the original data without arranging it first.

For even number of observations, the median is the n/2 th term only.

For odd number of observations, the median is found using the even-number rule.

Memory Tips

Mean as sum divided by number of observations

Mean, arithmetic mean, and average are the same

Sigma x means sum of all observations

Property 1 of mean: sum of deviations from mean is zero
