What to Focus On

  • Solid: anything which occupies space and has a definite shape
  • Volume: space occupied by a solid
  • Capacity of a container = internal volume

  • A cuboid has six rectangular faces
  • Every cuboid has four diagonals, and all are equal
  • Total surface area of cuboid = 2(l×b + b×h + h×l)

  • A cube has square faces
  • Cube is a special case of cuboid where l = b = h = a
  • Volume of cube = a³

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A cuboid has only one diagonal, so any one space diagonal is enough.

The total surface area of a cuboid is 2(l+b+h).

Lateral surface area of a cuboid includes the top and bottom faces.

Memory Tips

Solid means anything that occupies space and has a definite shape

Volume means the space occupied by a solid

Surface area means the sum of the areas of all surfaces of a solid

Area is 2-D and perimeter is 1-D, while solids are 3-D
