What to Focus On

  • Polygon: a closed plane figure bounded by at least three line segments
  • Triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon are named by sides
  • Convex polygon: each angle less than 180°

  • Polygon angle questions often combine the sum formula with parallel-line angle facts
  • Re-entrant polygons still obey the same interior angle sum formula
  • A heptagon with angle sum 900° fits the rule (2n - 4) right angles

  • Quadrilateral: closed plane figure bounded by four line segments
  • A quadrilateral has four vertices and two diagonals
  • Diagonals join opposite vertices

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Any closed figure with sides is a polygon, even if one angle is greater than 180 degrees.

The angle-sum formula (2n - 4) right angles works only for convex polygons.

Exterior angles of a polygon add up to 180 degrees.
