What to Focus On

  • a is called the base.
  • m is called the power, exponent, or index.
  • a^m means a repeated m times as a factor.
  • Same base in multiplication means add powers.
  • Same base in division means subtract powers.
  • A power raised to another power means multiply powers.
  • Each factor inside a product gets the same power.
  • Each part of a quotient gets the same power.
  • This rule helps simplify expressions with brackets.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

a^m \times a^n can be solved by multiplying the exponents.

a^m / a^n means subtract the bases or write a^m - n outside the exponent.

(a^m)^n becomes a^{m+n}.
