What to Focus On

  • (a+b)^2 is obtained by expanding (a+b)(a+b).
  • The expansion is a^2+2ab+b^2.
  • The middle term 2ab comes from ab+ab.
  • (a-b)^2 expands to a^2-2ab+b^2.
  • The middle term is negative because one bracket contains -b.
  • The square terms a^2 and b^2 remain positive.
  • Adding the two identities gives 2(a^2+b^2).
  • Subtracting the second from the first gives 4ab.
  • In the sum, the middle terms cancel.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

(a+b)^2 means a^2+b^2

(a-b)^2 means a^2-b^2

The middle term in (a+b)^2 or (a-b)^2 is only one ab

Memory Tips

Expansion means evaluating the contents of brackets

Square of sum identity

Square of difference identity

Adding the two square identities gives 2(a2+b2)
