1. Meaning and Features of Political Parties
- Political parties exist in all democratic systems.
- Political parties compete with each other only in a democracy.
- When people form organisations with the objective of achieving political power and participate in the electoral process, such organisations are called political parties.
2. Changing Nature of the Party System in India
- After independence, Congress had a majority at the Centre and in most States.
- This period is called the Era of Single dominant party system.
- The Congress controlled Indian politics in the post-independence period.
3. Recognition of National and Regional Parties
- The Election Commission prescribes conditions for recognition of national and regional parties.
- A party can be recognised as a national party by either of two alternative conditions.
- Condition one for a national party: minimum 6% valid votes in 4 or more States in earlier Loksabha or Assembly elections and minimum 4 members elected to Loksabha.

- Indian National Congress was established in 1885.
- At the time of its establishment, Congress was an all-comprehensive movement working for national independence.
- After independence, Congress emerged as the most dominant political party.
