  • Political parties exist in all democratic systems.
  • Political parties compete with each other only in a democracy.

  • After independence, Congress had a majority at the Centre and in most States.
  • This period is called the Era of Single dominant party system.

3. Recognition of National and Regional Parties

  • The Election Commission prescribes conditions for recognition of national and regional parties.
  • A party can be recognised as a national party by either of two alternative conditions.
  • Condition one for a national party: minimum 6% valid votes in 4 or more States in earlier Loksabha or Assembly elections and minimum 4 members elected to Loksabha.
