1. Wave Theory of Light and Huygens Principle
- Descartes gave the corpuscular model of light in 1637 and derived Snell's law.
- Huygens put forward the wave theory of light in 1678 and explained reflection, refraction, and double refraction.
- Foucault's 1850 experiment confirmed that the speed of light in water is less than in air, supporting the wave model.
2. Reflection and Refraction from Wave View
- For a plane wave incident on a plane surface, the reflected wavefront is obtained by Huygens construction.
- The law of reflection follows from congruent triangles in the construction, giving i = r.
- For refraction, the new wavefront depends on the speeds v1 and v2 in the two media.
3. Superposition, Coherent Sources, and Interference
- Interference is based on the principle of superposition.
- At a particular point in the medium, the resultant displacement is the vector sum of displacements due to individual waves.
- Coherent sources have a constant phase difference with time.
4. Young's Double Slit Experiment
- Young used a bright source and two pinholes to create two coherent sources.
- The two pinholes are illuminated by light from a common source, which locks their phases.
- Interference fringes appear on the screen due to the superposition of waves from S1 and S2.
Key Concepts
Central concept: Wave optics explains light as a wave and connects reflection, refraction, interference, diffraction, and polarisation through wavefronts, superposition, and transverse nature of light.
