  • A channel of distribution is the route or path along which goods move from producers to ultimate consumers.
  • Middlemen connect producers and consumers and help in buying, selling, storage, and distribution.

Types of Channels of Distribution

  • There are two broad types of channels: direct and indirect.
  • In a direct channel, there is no middleman between the producer and the consumer.
  • Producers may sell directly through door-to-door salesmen and their own retail stores.

Wholesalers

  • Wholesalers buy goods in bulk directly from producers and sell them in relatively smaller quantities to retailers.
  • In some cases, wholesalers also sell directly to consumers if the quantity to be purchased is more.
  • Wholesalers usually deal in a limited variety of goods and a specific line of product.

Retailers

  • Retailers buy goods from wholesalers or sometimes directly from producers.
  • They sell goods in small quantities to ultimate consumers for consumption, not for resale.
  • Retailers have direct contact with consumers and know their requirements.
