Formulas and Key Relations
Ionisation of Water and pH Scale
Pure water undergoes self-ionisation (auto-ionisation)
H₂O + H₂O ⇌ H₃O⁺ + OH⁻
Ionic product of water Kw = [H₃O⁺][OH⁻] = 1 × 10⁻¹⁴ at 25°C
Common Ion Effect
CH₃COONa → Na⁺ + CH₃COO⁻ (complete dissociation of salt)
Key relations
Examples
BF₃ + NH₃ → F₃B←NH₃.
The ionic product of water (Kw) = [H₃O⁺][OH⁻] = 1.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ at 25°C.
pH = -log[H₃O⁺] and pOH = -log[OH⁻].
At 25°C, pH + pOH = 14 (or pKw). pH values: <7 acidic, =7 neutral, >7 basic.
