  • Susceptibility is the lack of immunity to a pathogen
2

8.2 Innate Immunity

  • Innate immunity is natural resistance to infection present from birth without prior exposure to pathogens
  • Also called non-specific immunity because it acts against a wide range of pathogens

3

8.3 Acquired Immunity

  • Acquired immunity develops after birth in response to specific pathogenic exposure; also called specific immunity
  • Develops through either infection or immunization
  • Characteristics: antigenic specificity (targeted to specific antigens), diversity (responds to many different pathogens), self/non-self recognition, immunological memory
4

8.4 Immune Responses

  • Two types of immune responses: PRIMARY and SECONDARY
