Pressure Belts of the World
- There are seven global pressure belts: one equatorial low, two subtropical highs, two subpolar lows, and two polar highs.
- Equatorial Low-Pressure Belt lies between 0° to 5° N and S; receives vertical sun rays, causing air to rise.
- Subtropical High-Pressure Belts lie around 30° N and S; sinking air creates calm zones known as Horse Latitudes.
Winds and Their Types
- Winds are horizontal movements of air from high to low pressure.
- Permanent winds blow regularly throughout the year: Trade Winds, Westerlies, Polar Easterlies.
- Trade Winds blow from subtropical highs (30°) to equatorial low (0°); called NE in Northern Hemisphere, SE in Southern Hemisphere.
