  • A landform is a small to medium tract or parcel of the earth's surface.
  • A landscape is made up of several related landforms and is a large tract of earth's surface.
  • Landforms once formed may change in shape, size and nature slowly or fast due to continued action of geomorphic processes and agents.

2. Running Water and River Landforms

  • Running water has two components: overland flow and linear flow.
  • Overland flow moves as a sheet over the land surface.
  • Linear flow occurs as streams and rivers in valleys.

3. Valleys, Potholes, Plunge Pools, Meanders and Terraces

  • A gorge is a deep valley with very steep to straight sides.
  • A canyon is a deep valley with steep step-like sides.
  • A gorge is almost equal in width at the top and bottom.

4. Depositional Landforms of Running Water

  • Alluvial fans form when streams from higher levels enter foot-slope plains of low gradient.
  • Very coarse load gets dumped and spread into a broad cone-shaped deposit.
  • Streams on fans shift position and form distributaries.
