  • Waves are energy moving across the ocean surface, not the water itself.

  • Tides are the periodical rise and fall of sea level, once or twice a day, mainly due to the attraction of the Sun and the Moon.
  • Surges are movement of water caused by meteorological effects such as winds and atmospheric pressure changes.

4. Types of Tides and Special Tide Conditions

  • Semi-diurnal tides have two high tides and two low tides each day, with successive highs or lows of approximately the same height.
  • Diurnal tides have one high tide and one low tide each day, with successive highs and lows approximately the same height.
  • Mixed tides have variations in height and generally occur along the west coast of North America and on many Pacific islands.
